Smart EQ Fortwo Production to Cease
Smart has announced that it will stop taking orders for the EQ Fortwo starting April 2023. German media source Smart Emotion has reported that although production is slated to continue until mid-2024, due to lengthy delivery times, the EQ Fortwo’s manufacturing will eventually come to a halt. The cessation of the EQ Fortwo’s production is attributed to Smart’s strategic shift in direction, as the company is now producing vehicles through a joint venture with Geely.
The New Direction: Smart #1
The first outcome of this collaboration is the Smart #1, which is already available for pre-order. The Smart #1 significantly differs from Smart’s traditional compact cars, not only in name but also in design and technology. It utilizes Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform and measures a substantial 4.27 meters in length. The electric vehicle boasts a powerful 200 kW motor and is equipped with a 66 kWh battery, delivering an impressive range of up to 440 kilometers according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).
Phasing Out the EQ Fourfour
Previously, Smart discontinued the EQ Fourfour at the end of 2021, with production ceasing in early 2022. The discontinuation of the EQ Fortwo appeared inevitable following the EQ Fourfour’s phase-out.
A Fond Farewell: The “final EDITION”
Despite the bittersweet nature of this transition, Smart Emotion reveals that there is a sentimental send-off with an unofficial “final EDITION”. This special edition is an initiative by German Smart dealerships and is limited to just 150 units. Available in both convertible and coupe forms, these vehicles are based on the fully-equipped Fortwo prime line models complemented with the “exclusive package”. The convertible is priced at 31,740 euros, while the coupe is set at 28,695 euros, prior to any deductions.
