For the first time in history, an electric vehicle has become the best-selling car worldwide, with the Tesla Model Y surpassing the Toyota Corolla. Despite its initial high price, subsequent price reductions have led to an 85% increase in Model Y sales over the previous year. The Model Y has maintained its lead throughout the first and second quarters of 2023, with significant growth in markets like China and the United States.
In 2022, the Toyota Corolla was the global best-seller, followed by the RAV4, Ford’s F-Series, and then the Model Y. However, the latest figures show the Model Y in the lead, with the Corolla experiencing a 7.4% decrease in sales year over year. The top 10 list of best-selling vehicles now includes more electric and hybrid models, reflecting a shift in consumer preferences.
As of the latest data, the Tesla Model Y leads with over 427,000 units sold, while the Corolla has sold over 410,000 units. The Ford F-Series ranks third with a 24.6% increase in sales, followed by the Toyota RAV4, and the Chevrolet Silverado, which now features an electric version. Other top sellers include the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota Camry, Toyota Hilux, and the Tesla Model 3.
Toyota maintains a strong presence in the market with a diverse range of vehicles. The automotive industry remains unpredictable, and it is yet to be seen whether Tesla will retain its top position and if electric vehicles will continue to rise in popularity.
